1 Identify the type of date
Do not eat food after its use-by date. Best-before assessment is different but still depends on correct storage and sound packaging. Do not automatically apply another country’s labelling rules.
2 Read the additional instructions
An unopened-pack date does not override instructions after opening. Record when you open a product and follow its temperature and consumption limits, especially for perishable food.
3 Do not taste to test safety
Not every hazard changes smell or appearance. If storage, packaging or contamination is questionable, do not take a risk just because the printed date is far away.
Practical checklist
- Date type identified.
- Storage conditions maintained.
- Packaging checked.
- Opening date recorded.
